RELATIONSHIP READINGS:
Fear of Intimacy and Attachment Styles by Katrina Wynne, MA, CTM, CTI, CLC I just returned from the NW Tarot Symposium, Portland, Oregon, USA, where I offered a talk based on a classic question many readers receive… “Will (____) call me again?”. If we can move beyond the “predictive” aspect of this question, what I would call the “symptom” of the relationship issue, and take a deep dive into the “cause” of this pattern, we might be able to really support and help the client make better choices. In my October 2022 article in this newsletter, we explored X Wheel of Fortune from the point of view of repeating habits, patterns, obsessions, and addictions. https://www.tarotschool.com/TarotTips221001.html When a client returns for a Tarot reading and presents the same basic issue, such as waiting for their love interest to reach out, this may fall into the definition of an addiction, for the client continues to engage in a painful pattern, but expects a different result…as if they have no control over their own life and need guidance from somewhere else. There is a growing body of wisdom in the realm of psychology called “Attachment Theory”, basically, one’s ability, or lack thereof, to bond with others, triggered by early childhood experiences. This theory deserves our greatest attention if we work with relationship issues, but for the sake of this short article, let’s look at the two main “styles” that tend to get caught in what I call the “Cha-Cha-Cha dance of intimacy avoidance” and the one style that keeps coming back for readings. When the client is complaining about their love interest not calling—after having such a strong connection, they just disappear for a while—there is a good chance that the love interest suffers from the “Dismissive Avoidant” (DA) Attachment Style. The DA wants to have a love connection, but is deeply afraid of losing that love or being hurt, to the point that they withdraw the moment they start feeling a connection. They don’t have the emotional capacity to sit with difficult emotions, much less process the disappointment that their partner may be feeling about their backing away. What about the client, the one who is disappointed and feels crazy for they know they had a special connection, only to feel pushed away? They feel desperate to make sense of this sudden distance, and find themselves reaching out more and more to the DA, who keeps them hanging. Symptoms of anxiety, and possible depression can ensue. Chances are, the one who is trying so hard to alleviate their anxiety by coming to you for this reading is the “Anxious Preoccupied” (AP) Attachment Style…the one who keeps trying to continue the relationship, despite the obvious disconnect. In many ways this is related to codependence, which I highlighted in my article on VI The Lovers, https://www.tarotschool.com/TarotTips220401.html, with Attachment Theory revealing the core wounds that led to this Cha-Cha-Cha intimacy avoidance relationship pattern. Here are some key characteristics of these two Attachment Styles: Dismissive Avoidant — • Cold and distant. • Wary of commitment to relationships. • Pre-occupied with work and hobbies. • May be passive-aggressive, or have narcissistic tendencies. Anxious Preoccupied — • Can be anxious about their relationships. • Greater need for reassurance and affirmation. • May invent or magnify conflicts or difficulties in their relationships. • Pessimistic or paranoid view of their relationships. • Can act jealous or possessive. As readers, I believe is it paramount that we understand these relationship dynamics so that we do not fall into the role of soothing the AP, or enabling the continuation of an old, hurtful pattern. What if the reader has a blind spot due to their own core wounds? “Healer heal thyself.” After all, these relationship readings tend to be the bread and butter of many a reader…just sayin’. I recommend the work of Thais Gibson of “The Personal Development School”, and her book, Attachment Theory, to learn more about the four styles, their core wounds, and ways to heal from these old patterns. KAU CHIM / LOTTERY POETRY
Kau Chim or Kau Cim, also known as Lottery poetry, is a fortune telling practice that dates back to the 12th century, where a question is asked to the deities. The querent purifies a cylinder with bamboo sticks by revolving it around an incense burner, mixes the sticks by hand, then kneels and asks their question. Upon shaking the cylinder, a single stick will fall out, marked with a number. The number corresponds to one of 100 unique oracles, which provide the answer to the question. The practice is often performed in a Taoist or Buddhist temple in front of an altar. Kau Chim Sticks predictions tell you what opportunities you will come across in the near future, and can also forewarn you about the problems and danger that you face now or in the future. Awareness of the situation is meant to empower you to prepare ahead for both the good and the bad times. Kau Chim is often referred to as Chien Tung or Chinese Fortune Sticks by westerners. In the US, a version has been sold since 1915 under the name Chi Chi Sticks. Kau Chim is also sometimes known as "The Oracle of Kuan Yin" in Buddhist traditions. It is widely available in Thai temples, known as Siam Si. The similar practice is also found in Japan, named O-mikuji. When I was young, my mother purchased a set of "Foo Chu Ancient Chinese Fortune Telling Sticks". This is another American version, which was released in 1965 by Lakeside Toys, and I still have it. As you can see in the photo above, the set consists of a long cylindrical cup or tube containing 78 bamboo sticks printed with numbers and Chinese characters. There is also a booklet of interpretations. Each number corresponds to a 6-line poem, a proclamation, and an answer to your wish. Here are a couple of examples: No. 49 YOUR FORTUNE The one who picks a "Forty Nine", Was born beneath a lucky sign. Don't be greedy, Don't be grasping, Play it fair, You'll get all you're asking. Ambition will slow you down, for a while. ANSWER TO YOUR WISH After some setbacks, you will get your wish. No. 7 YOUR FORTUNE Alas! Today you've drawn number "Seven", Which indicates few smiles from heaven. You go through life so very pleased With what you say and how you act; But more attention to others' woes, Will make you happier, in fact. You will get involved with a mysterious woman. ANSWER TO YOUR WISH Your wish will be denied. There's an online version here: https://accesschinese.com/divination/kaucim/stick.php These fortunes are very simplistic compared to the beautiful and enigmatic poetry of the traditional version. For instance: – Stick #2 – The dead trees break into green once more; The woods are alive with buzzing life. The immortal peach tree gives forth its fruit, And all the lost find their way home. TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION In this verse, winter turns to spring, and new life is born. Your own affairs will prosper in time, given the natural course of things. All you need to do is let Nature take its course; opportunities will naturally come your way, especially with a little self-discipline. Though your gains will not be great, they will come steadily and certainly, whether in business or in personal relationships. Prosperity is just a matter of time. REFLECTION This is a vision of wonder and joy––not just because spring is on the way, but because the immortal peaches are ripe. This only happens once every thousand years. All the signs suggest that this is a most auspicious time. So mote it be! We’d love your suggestion or submissions for this column!
